Vestland has one of the largest red deer populations in the country, and deer hunting in the fjord and mountain communities is a great tradition. The terrain is steep, and much of it is stand hunting and stalking on slopes with forest and open bogs.
Several wild reindeer areas lie wholly or partly in the county. Wild reindeer hunting is managed by the reindeer boards, and quotas vary. Ptarmigan and moose are found too, mostly inland.
