Everything you need to pass jegerprøven — the Norwegian hunting exam — and what to do once you have. Free, with practice questions for each of the nine sessions. Written in English, because the exam can be taken in English but the textbook cannot.

Veida does not run courses and does not hold exams. The mandatory course must be taken with an approved provider, and the exam is taken in the «Jegerprøveeksamen» app through your municipality. These pages are revision and practice alongside the course. Our questions are written by us from public regulations — they are not exam questions.

From nothing to hunter

    Sign up for the course

    The course is mandatory and is run by the study associations Studieforbundet natur og miljø and Studieforbundet Næring og samfunn, and by local hunting and fishing associations. It usually costs 2,000–3,500 kr, often including the textbook. Schools and the armed forces also run courses for their own students and soldiers.

    Attend the nine sessions

    30 hours in total, with practical weapon handling and a field day. You have to turn up — the course cannot be taken as online reading only.

    Practise

    Read the book, work through the sessions here, and take the mock exam until you are comfortably above 40 correct.

    Take the exam

    Download the «Jegerprøveeksamen» app, register with your municipality and pay 360 kr. The exam is electronic: 50 questions with three answers each, 50 minutes, and you need 40 correct.

    Pay the hunting fee

    The hunting fee covers one hunting year (1 April–31 March) and must be paid before you hunt — 420 kr, or 540 kr if you will hunt moose, red deer or wild reindeer (2026/27).

    Pass the shooting test for big game

    To hunt big game with a rifle you must pass the shooting test every hunting year, for every rifle you will use.

Common questions

Can I do the whole thing online?

No. The exam itself is electronic, but the mandatory 30-hour course requires attendance. Websites — ours included — are revision, not an approved course.

How many can I get wrong?

Ten. You get 50 questions and need at least 40 correct.

Can I take the exam in English?

Yes. In the exam app you choose Bokmål, Nynorsk or English before you start. There is currently no textbook in English — which is why these pages exist in both languages.

What if I fail?

You can retake the exam after one week at the earliest, and you pay the fee again.

Can I use any aids?

No. You may use headphones to have the questions read aloud, but you must bring your own. If you have reading or writing difficulties you may get extra time — talk to your municipality beforehand.

Does the licence expire?

No. It is the hunting fee that must be paid each hunting year, and the shooting test that must be passed each year for big game hunting with a rifle.

Do I need a gun to take the exam?

No. You can buy your own firearm from the age of 18, with a licence from the police. Before that you may hunt with a borrowed firearm under the training-hunt rules.
