The ground rules
All wildlife is protected unless an open season has been set. Hunting rights follow the landowner, so you need permission from whoever owns or rents out the hunting.
To hunt you must be listed in the hunter registry and have paid the hunting fee for the hunting year, which runs from 1 April to 31 March.
Age limits and training hunts
Small game hunting requires you to be 16, big game hunting 18. Trapping may be done from 16, but for wild boar, lynx and wolverine the limit is 18.
On a training hunt you may take part earlier: small game from the year you turn 14 until you are 16, with consent from your guardian and under the supervision of someone over 20. Big game from the year you turn 16 until you are 18 — and then you must have passed both the hunting exam and the shooting test.
Reporting
Big game taken is reported through the municipality and the deer registry; the person responsible for the hunting unit reports within 14 days of the end of the hunt.
Everyone who has paid the hunting fee must report their small game bag by 1 May — including if you did not hunt or did not take anything.

Practise this session
