← The Norwegian hunting licence

After the exam

You are in the hunter registry. Here is what remains before you are in the woods — and this is where most people stall, because they have nobody to hunt with.

The checklist

  1. Pay the hunting fee

420 kr, or 540 kr with the big game supplement (2026/27). It covers one hunting year, 1 April–31 March.

    Pay at Landbruksdirektoratet

  2. Pass the shooting test

Big game with a rifle only: 30 shots over at least two days, then five shots at a game figure. Every year, for every rifle. Ranges take bookings from spring.

  3. Get a firearm

From 18 you can apply to the police for a licence. Until then you may borrow one under the training-hunt rules. Think about what you will actually hunt before you buy.

    Compare rifles and gear

  4. Find a hunting team

The usual way in is a local team through people you know or the local hunting and fishing association. In Veida the team can invite you with a link, and you see the stands and the hunting days straight away.

  5. Or rent hunting land

Landowners list hunting here — periods, the whole hunting right for a year, or a multi-year lease. You see the outline on the map, the game and the rules before you ask.

  6. Check the seasons

Seasons are not the same for every species or every place, and local regulations can tighten them.

  7. Join someone else's hunt first

Ask to come along as an observer or a driver for a weekend. No course teaches you as much as a day on the stand with someone who has done it before.

The first year

Most new hunters start with small game: ptarmigan, hare, forest grouse and ducks. It needs less organising, you can go alone, and you learn the ground.

For big game you usually join a team. Say that you are new — a good team gives you a safe stand, walks the sectors with you and settles the radio routine before the hunt starts.

How Veida helps from here

Veida is the map your team shares: stands with shooting sectors, hunting days with assignments, who is ready, where the dogs are, and sightings and harvests in one log. It works without coverage, which is what you have in the woods.

Without a team, you will find hunting land for rent here on veidajakt.no — and the tools (seasons, ballistics, weight calculator and the gear overview) are open to everyone.
