Hunter's exam, licence fee, shooting test, firearms licence and reporting. Always check the current rules.
Note: This is a checklist, not a complete account of the regulations. Rules change; check against current regulations and the municipality where you hunt.
The basic requirements
- A passed hunter's exam.
- Paid hunting licence fee for the hunting year (1 April–31 March), on Min jegerside at the Brønnøysund Register Centre.
- A passed shooting test for big game every year, with the gun you will hunt with.
- Gun and ammunition that meet the minimum requirements for big game (bullet weight and energy) — check the hunting regulation.
- Zero the rifle with the same ammunition you hunt with, and practise regularly.

Papers to bring
- Harvest permit or hunting permit for the area, as the holder of the hunting rights requires.
- Firearms licence (one per gun), or a loan declaration if you hunt with a borrowed gun.
- Proof of paid licence fee and passed shooting test (Min jegerside on your phone will do).
- ID.

During the hunt
- Only shoot animals of the type the permit covers.
- Duty to search when an animal is wounded. Tell the holder of the hunting rights and the municipality if the animal is not found.
- Drones are not allowed in connection with hunting. Motor traffic off-road requires a permit.

After the harvest
- Report the harvest as the holder of the hunting rights and the municipality require, and record moose/red deer sightings for the hunting day.
- The Cervid Register (Hjorteviltregisteret) collects harvests and sightings.
