From driven moose hunts to pointing dogs in the mountains — the most common ways to hunt in Norway.
Stand hunting and driven hunts
Shooters stand on stands along crossings and game trails, while drivers — with or without dogs — move through the terrain and push the animals towards the stands. It takes careful planning of stands, sectors and wind, and clear communication. Common for moose, red deer and roe deer.
Free-running dogs and baying
A moose dog runs loose, finds the moose and holds it in place by barking — baying. The hunter sneaks in towards the bay, preferably against the wind. Hare hounds and driving dogs, on the other hand, chase the game ahead of them, and the hunter waits where it is expected to come.
Leashed tracking dog
The dog is on a leash and leads the hunter towards the game by scent and track. The hunter sets the pace and can get close without the animal being chased. Widely used for moose.
Stalking
The hunter moves slowly and quietly through the terrain, always into the wind, stopping often to look and listen. It takes patience and knowing where the game is. Common for red deer, roe deer and wild reindeer.
Waiting at trails and bait
The hunter sits for a long time in one place — at a trail, a field, a bog or bait where permitted — and waits for the game. Widely used for red deer, roe deer, fox and wild boar, often at dusk.
Pointing dogs
A pointing dog quarters the terrain and freezes when it finds birds. The hunter walks up, the birds flush, and the shot is taken in the air. The classic way to hunt ptarmigan in the mountains and grouse in the forest.
Decoys and hides
The hunter lies in a hide and draws the game in with decoys or calls. Common for geese, ducks, wood pigeons and crows, and for foxes with a call.
Trapping
Traps are a legal method for some species, such as pine marten and mink, with strict requirements for the traps and for checking them. Check the rules before you set a trap.
