What must be in the pack, and what to do if something goes wrong.
The minimum in the pack
You do not need the most expensive gear. You need a good pack, binoculars you see well with, clothes that keep you warm and dry through a long day, map and compass, first aid, a rifle you know well, a sharp knife, and a bivvy bag for when the weather turns.
- Gun, ammunition and firearms licence — check the zero on the range before the hunt.
- Binoculars and preferably a rangefinder.
- Knife and stone, game bags, cord and gloves.
- Map and compass, and a phone with the map downloaded.
- Clothes for wet and cold weather, spare socks, hat and gloves.
- Food and drink for a long day.
- First aid, bivvy bag, headlamp and matches.
Weather and mountain safety
The weather changes fast, especially in the mountains. Follow the forecast, plan within your ability, and turn back in time. Tell someone where you are going and when you are expected back.
Emergencies
Emergency numbers in Norway: 113 (medical), 112 (police) and 110 (fire). They need your position as coordinates.
Check the mobile coverage where you will hunt. If it is poor, agree on fixed meeting points and times with the team.
